JPG to PNG
How to use the JPG to PNG
- Choose JPG or JPEG files, or drag and drop them onto the box. One file or a whole batch.
- Each file converts straight away to a lossless PNG with the same width and height.
- Download files one by one, or use Download all. Clear all removes them from the page.
Examples
- An upload form or app that only accepts PNG. Convert the JPG and upload the PNG instead.
- An image you will keep editing. PNG is lossless, so saving it again and again adds no new compression artefacts.
- A photo to send or post is usually better left as JPG: the PNG will be several times larger and look the same.
What converting JPG to PNG does
Your browser decodes the JPG and saves every pixel losslessly as a PNG. The conversion adds no new compression, but it can’t remove what JPG compression already did, so the PNG looks exactly like the JPG, not sharper.
Why the PNG is bigger
JPG throws away detail the eye barely notices to keep files small. PNG keeps every pixel, so a PNG of a photo is often three to ten times larger. That is expected. To make a smaller file instead, try the Image Compressor.
Transparency
JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque too. Converting doesn’t remove the background: that needs a separate editing step. Converted files don’t keep the JPG’s metadata, such as camera details or location.
Privacy
Conversion runs in a background worker in your browser. No image data is uploaded, and converted files exist only in your browser’s memory until you download them or leave the page.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser, and your images never leave your device.
Does converting to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG is an exact copy of the JPG’s pixels. It stops further quality loss when you edit and save again, but it can’t restore detail the JPG already lost.
Will the image size change?
The width and height stay exactly the same. The file size usually gets larger, because PNG is lossless.
Is there a file size limit?
Each file can be up to 100 MB, and you can convert as many files as you like. Very large images can still exceed what some browsers, especially on phones, can draw.
Why was my file rejected?
The tool checks the start of each file to make sure it really is a JPG, whatever its name. A PNG or another file renamed to .jpg is caught and explained.
