How to use the Running Pace Calculator

  1. Choose what to calculate: your pace, a finish time or a distance. Then choose kilometres or miles.
  2. Enter the other two values. Use a race button to fill in a standard distance, and enter times in hours, minutes and seconds.
  3. The result updates as you type, with the pace per kilometre and per mile and your average speed.

Examples

  • 10 km in 50:00 is a pace of 5:00 per km, or 8:03 per mile, at 12 km/h.
  • A marathon in 4:00:00 needs an average pace of 5:41 per km, or 9:09 per mile.
  • A half marathon at 5:30 per km finishes in 1:56:02.
  • 45 minutes at 4:30 per km covers 10 km.

How pace, time and distance relate

Pace is the time it takes to cover one kilometre or one mile. It is time divided by distance, so a 25:00 5K is 25 minutes ÷ 5 km = 5:00 per km. The same relationship gives the other two values: finish time is pace × distance, and distance is time ÷ pace.

Speed is the same information the other way up: distance per hour. A 5:00 per km pace is 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. One mile is exactly 1.609344 km, so a pace per mile is the pace per km × 1.609344.

Race distances

The buttons use the official lengths: 5 km, 10 km, 21.0975 km for a half marathon and 42.195 km for a marathon (13.1 and 26.2 miles). Courses are measured along the shortest route, so a GPS watch often reads a little long on race day, and your watch pace can look slightly faster than your official pace.

Even pace is an average

The result assumes you run at the same pace the whole way. Hills, wind, crowds and fatigue all change your actual splits, so treat a target pace as a guide rather than a guarantee. For time maths beyond running, try the Hours & Time Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your time by your distance. For 10 km in 55 minutes: 55 ÷ 10 = 5.5 minutes per km, which is 5:30 per km. Choose Pace above, enter the distance and time, and the calculator does this for you in km and miles.

What pace do I need for a sub-2-hour half marathon?

Under 5:41 per km, or about 9:09 per mile, held for the whole 21.1 km. Choose Finish time, pick Half marathon and try different paces to see the finishing time each one gives.

Can I switch between kilometres and miles?

Yes. Use the Kilometres and Miles buttons. The distance and pace fields use the unit you choose, and the result always shows both, so you can compare a per-km pace with a per-mile one.

Why doesn't my GPS watch match the result?

GPS distances are estimates, and they drift more among buildings and trees and on tight bends. Your watch may also show your current pace rather than your average. The calculator uses exact distances, so it matches an accurately measured course.

Are my times saved or sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent or stored. Reloading the page clears it.
