WebP to PNG
Your images never leave your device. Conversion happens in this browser tab.
How to use the WebP to PNG
- Choose WebP files, or drag and drop them onto the box. One file or a whole batch.
- Each file converts straight away to a lossless PNG. Transparent areas stay transparent.
- Download files one by one, or use Download all. Clear all removes them from the page.
Examples
- A logo or icon saved from a website as .webp. PNG keeps the transparent background, so it sits cleanly on any colour in a document, slide or design tool.
- A screenshot or diagram in WebP that an older app or upload form won’t open. PNG is supported almost everywhere and keeps text and sharp edges crisp.
- A photo where file size matters more than transparency. PNG files of photos are large, so use WebP to JPG instead, or shrink the result with the Image Compressor.
WebP vs PNG
WebP is a modern image format from Google that many websites serve because the files are small. PNG is older, lossless and supported by virtually every app, browser, editor and upload form. Both support transparency.
What the conversion does
Your browser decodes the WebP and saves every pixel, including its transparency, as a PNG. PNG is lossless, so the conversion adds no new compression artefacts. Detail already removed by a lossy WebP can’t be restored, though, so the PNG looks exactly like the WebP, not better.
Why the PNG is bigger
PNG stores images without lossy compression, so a PNG is usually several times larger than the WebP it came from, especially for photos. That is expected. For graphics, logos and screenshots the size is usually reasonable. For photos, JPG is the better choice.
Privacy
The conversion runs in a background worker in your browser. No image data is uploaded to CHARTOVANA or anyone else, and converted files exist only in your browser’s memory until you download them or leave the page. You can check this by loading the page, going offline and converting a file. Converted PNGs don’t keep the WebP’s metadata, such as camera details or location.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting WebP to PNG keep transparency?
Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels are kept exactly. Nothing is filled with white or any other colour.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser, so your images never leave your device. There is no sign-up and nothing is stored.
Is there a file size or number limit?
Each file can be up to 100 MB, and you can add as many files as you like. They are converted one at a time to keep memory use steady. Very large images can exceed what some browsers, especially on phones, can draw.
Why was my file rejected?
The tool checks the start of each file to confirm it really is a WebP image, whatever its name. A PNG, JPG or other file renamed to .webp is caught and explained, and a damaged file shows an error instead of a result.
What about animated WebP files?
A PNG holds a single image, so an animated WebP is converted to a PNG of its first frame. The file list marks animated files so this doesn’t catch you out.
Should I convert to PNG or JPG?
Choose PNG for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with transparency. Choose JPG for photos, where smaller files matter more and transparency doesn’t.
