How to use the Hours & Time Calculator

  1. Enter a start time and an end time. If the end time is earlier than the start, it is counted on the next day.
  2. Add your unpaid break in minutes, if you had one. The hours worked update straight away, in hours and minutes and in decimal hours.
  3. For a timesheet, use Add more days to enter up to seven shifts and see the weekly total.
  4. To find a time before or after another, switch to Add or subtract.

Examples

  • 09:00 to 17:00 is 8 h, or 8.00 decimal hours.
  • 09:00 to 17:00 with a 30-minute break is 7 h 30 min worked, or 7.50 decimal hours.
  • 23:00 to 02:00 is 3 h. The end time falls on the next day.
  • Five days of 09:00 to 17:30 with 30-minute breaks is 40 h for the week.
  • 09:30 plus 7 h 45 min is 17:15 (5:15 PM).

How hours are calculated

The calculator counts the minutes from the start time to the end time, then subtracts the break. When the end time is earlier than the start time, it assumes the shift ends the next day and adds 24 hours. That is how night shifts work, so 22:00 to 06:30 is 8 h 30 min. The same start and end time counts as 0 hours.

Decimal hours

Payroll and timesheet systems often use decimal hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 30 minutes is 0.50 hours, 15 minutes is 0.25 and 45 minutes is 0.75. So 7 h 45 min is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. The result shows decimal hours, rounded to two places, beside hours and minutes.

Things it doesn’t do

Times are plain clock times with no dates or time zones, so a shift that crosses a daylight-saving change is counted as if the clock did not move. Each shift can be up to 24 hours long. For pay, overtime rules vary by country and employer, so check your contract.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid break. For 08:45 to 17:15 with a 45-minute break: 8 h 30 min minus 45 min is 7 h 45 min, or 7.75 decimal hours.

What if my shift goes past midnight?

Enter the times as they are, for example 23:00 to 02:00. When the end time is earlier than the start time, it is treated as the next day, giving 3 hours.

Can I use 12-hour times with AM and PM?

Yes. The time fields follow your device’s settings, so they show AM and PM if your device uses a 12-hour clock. The calculation is the same either way.

How do I total my hours for the week?

Select Add more days and enter each shift, up to seven. Each day shows its own hours, and the result shows the weekly total in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. Days left blank are skipped.

Are my times saved anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent or stored. Reloading the page clears the times.
