Examples
- hello world becomes Hello World in Title Case, Hello world in Sentence case and helloWorld in camelCase.
- don’t stop becomes Don’t Stop in Title Case: the apostrophe stays and only the first letter of the word is capitalised.
- well-known fact becomes Well-Known Fact in Title Case, because a hyphen separates two words.
- first line and second line on separate lines both start with a capital in Sentence case, because a line break starts a new sentence.
The five cases, and when to use them
UPPERCASE and lowercase
These change every letter and leave spaces, punctuation and line breaks alone. UPPERCASE is useful for headings and labels; lowercase is useful for usernames, email addresses and tags.
Title Case
Title Case capitalises the first letter of each word and lowercases the rest. Words joined by a hyphen count as separate words, so “well-known” becomes “Well-Known”. Because the rest of each word is lowercased, an acronym such as NASA becomes Nasa — write acronyms back in capitals afterwards if you need them.
Sentence case
Sentence case lowercases everything, then capitalises the first letter after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark followed by a space, and the first letter of each line. Decimals such as 3.14 are not treated as sentence breaks. This is the case most style guides recommend for headings.
camelCase
camelCase removes spaces and punctuation, lowercases the first word and capitalises every word after it, so “user profile settings” becomes “userProfileSettings”. It is common in JavaScript variables, JSON keys and database column names.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text uploaded or saved?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never sent to a server and is not stored, so it is gone when you close or reload the page.
Does it keep my line breaks and punctuation?
Yes for UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case and Sentence case. camelCase is the exception: it joins words and removes spaces and punctuation by design.
Why did an acronym such as NASA become Nasa?
Title Case lowercases the rest of each word, so acronyms lose their capitals. Convert to Title Case first and fix the few acronyms by hand, or use UPPERCASE if everything should be capitalised.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the page has loaded. All the conversion rules run locally, so no network request is needed to use the tool.
